Three Steps to Killer Content

Posted by Ronald Huereca

It seems like every blog has a technique for killer content. My technique is simple and falls within three steps.

1. Write a how-to post about something lethal.

2. Instruct the readers to try it at home.

3. Profit? Err, maybe not. But there’s a third step somewhere, I assure you.

Home is where my ZIP Code is.

Being a military brat, I had a rather awkward experience when I was visiting my friend this weekend for his wedding.

His future mother in-law asked me, “So where are you from?”

I replied, “I’m not really from anywhere.”

“Well, where were you born?”

I replied, “In Texas. But I have never lived there.”

Growing aggravated, she asked, “Well, where do you call home?”

I responded, “Home is where my ZIP code is.”

Growing even more aggravated and confused, she asked, “Well, then where is home?”

I smiled, “Currently?”

She nodded yes.

“Here.”

Google, Check Your Temperature

Google, what are you doing giving a personal blog a page rank of 6? Are you nuts? Not that I’m complaining, I suppose. I guess it’s a combination of being around for a while, and refusing to place text links.

I suppose I better start writing some controversial stuff again :)
As a side note, another blog I help run (the Reader Appreciation Project) is now a pagerank of 5.

I Miss You Arizona

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This past weekend I went to Sierra Vista, Arizona and watched my good friend get married.

It’s the first wedding I’ve been able to attend since a door closed in my life.

As I flew into Tucson and made the hour or so drive down to Sierra Vista, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the three years I spent in Phoenix.

It was hot. It was windy. It was desert. But I loved it.

Being back in Arizona made me wonder, “Could I possibly call this home?”

It seems I’ve been to every weather extreme. I’ve lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. I’ve lived in a tropical environment (Philippines). I’ve lived in a dry climate (Las Vegas). And I’ve also lived in a rather humid place (Northern Alabama).

However, none could compare to the desert of southern Arizona.

I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Another Notch on My Belt - del.icio.us Most Popular

I got a groovy e-mail from a friend that said:

You are on http://del.icio.us/popular/ :)

Maybe I should quit my day job, no? Ok, not really. Blogging definitely doesn’t pay enough, but it’s good to know people like my stuff.

Punk Goes Crunk

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This week I received an Amazon.com e-mail telling me of a new CD released called “Punk Goes Crunk”.

If you’re not familiar with the “Punk Goes…” series, there have been albums released called:

  • Punk Goes Pop
  • Punk Goes 80s
  • Punk Goes 90s
  • Punk Goes Acoustic
  • Punk Goes Acoustic 2

When I found out that “Punk Goes Crunk” was punk covers of rap songs, I had to at least check it out. Call this a guilty-pleasure purchase.

The lyrics are as bad as you expect them to be, but some of the covers are pretty cool.

Below are YouTube videos of two covers. Both have explicit lyrics, so be warned.

The Devil Wears Prada - Still Fly

Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Notorious Thugs

The Notorious Thugs cover definitely brought back teenage memories. Not sure if that’s a good thing :)

A PowerPoint Godsend for Cube-Dwellers

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Almost everyone has had to deal with a horrible PowerPoint presentation.

In fact, I challenge anybody with insomnia to make it through a day of PowerPoint meetings without an ounce of shuteye.

The worst ones are the ones where people read directly from the slides! Why not just send me the darn thing and I can read it for myself!?

I’ve always treated PowerPoint as a supplement to the presentation and not the “actual” presentation.

If you’re sick of boring PowerPoint presentations, or would like to improve the ones you do, check out this presentation below.

Alex challenged me to a Speedtest. I will admit I failed the first few times. The trick is not to try too hard.

Well, I Officially Made it to the Front Page of Digg. Did I Feel Special?

Posted by Ronald Huereca

On Sunday, March 30th, I awoke to a pleasant surprise. A post I wrote had made the front page of Digg.

Digg Front Page

The post? Well, I just happened to be one of the first to publish an article on the release of WordPress 2.5.

Should the article have been dugg? Probably not, since it wasn’t the official release. But keep in mind, the article was published before the official release. Should I have waited for the official release? Are you nuts?!

In this case, it paid to be first. But I talked to Mark at WLTC and he said there was no unusual increase in traffic. I have my own theories that WLTC itself is its own social network, and probably much more powerful than Digg with regards to WordPress related news.

So do I feel special that I made Digg’s front page? Not really. But I suppose it’s another certificate to hang on the wall.
