Misleading Headlines: Star Trek Episode IV

Posted by Ronald Huereca

There’s something fishy about this headline. It’s about 2/3rds of the way down.

Star Trek Episode IV - A New Hope

I didn’t know that Star Trek had an Episode IV. Thank you cetroyer for pointing this one out.

Meme - 5 Things I Enjoy About Blogging

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Bes over at The Reasoner unfairly tagged me again after I ducked out of the way. Bes, in fact, cheated and tagged me as I was getting a drink from the water fountain. Not cool.

The last meme I did was about my readership. The meme I did before that one is eerily similar to the one I am doing today; I wrote about the reasons I blog.

Here are the five things I enjoy about blogging. Pardon my headings. I am in a rather sarcastic mood.

1. Not Being Silent

Hmmm. Perhaps I should rephrase the above heading to, “Being able to voice my opinion.” I like the fact that when people suggest I should be silent, I don’t have to be.

I like the fact that when I have a grievance, I can write about it to others. I also like the fact that I can hurl my feelings and un-pleasantries onto the Internet and still have people actually reading my stuff. That in itself is amazing. Continue Reading…

Showing My Respect to a Brave Young Soldier

Posted by Ronald Huereca

On December 4th, 2006, A young Soldier was manning the machine gun in an armored Humvee in the Azamiyah neighborhood in Baghdad, Iraq. Suddenly an insurgent from above the Humvee pitched a grenade towards the machine gunner. The grenade went down the gunner’s hatch inside the Humvee. Within this Humvee were four other Soldiers. The young machine gunner had seconds to react. Continue Reading…

I Despise Indian Givers

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I came across an article on Slate that stirred up the emotions I have towards Indian Givers.

Indian Givers (please excuse the rather politically incorrect phrase) are givers who give something away, but want it back.

I would also argue that an Indian Giver is also someone who gives something away, but is angered by a person’s use of the item.

Aside from parents giving a child something as a test of responsibility, I think that once a gift is given, a gift is given — no strings attached.

A Personal Example

My friend gave me a watch for Christmas. By chance, I also received another watch, which in my opinion was far nicer. Since I had no use for my friend’s watch, I decided to sell it to my roommate at the time. My roommate, after a little while, decided to give it to my other roommate.

My friend came to visit one time and asked where the watch he gave me was. I explained what happened and he became very furious and said, “See if I ever buy anything for you again.”

My friend’s reaction slightly peeved me. If I knew the gift was going to come with strings attached, I never would have accepted it in the first place.

Please Don’t be an Indian Giver

If you give someone a gift, give it and forget about it. If that friend or person makes use of that gift, great. If the friend decides to sell the gift at the next garage sale, great. Once you give the gift, it should no longer be your concern. After all, you “gave” it away didn’t you? It’s no longer yours.

What do you think about Indian Givers? Do you have your own personal rant to share?

500 Words - Honor and America’s Promises

Posted by Ronald Huereca

What is honor exactly? And does America have it?

Honor (according to dictionary.com), is having high public esteem, having high respect, and being a source of credit or distinction.

When looking at the average headlines on Foxnews or CNN, would you say that America can be labeled as honorable throughout the world? Do other countries respect us, and hold us in high public esteem?

Columnist Orson Scott Card wrote a rather pointed essay describing the state of America’s honor. He gave past and present examples of the honorable state of America. The rest of this article will be a brief summary and commentary on some of the author’s points of this must-read essay. Continue Reading…

A Little Run Can Help Depression

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I have always been somewhat of a runner, but didn’t get extremely serious about until July of last year. I will probably never be a marathon runner, but I’ve been able to increase my stamina to a point where I can run about four miles comfortably on a treadmill. Outside it’s about two to three miles.

My quest to improve my running resulted in my attempt to quit smoking. So far I’ve been able to lay off the cancer sticks for a little over four months.

One day last week I was having a bad case of the pits. It seemed that everything was going wrong and I had absolutely no energy or desire to do anything. I was moody, tired, and burnt out. I just wanted to go home and sleep.

On my drive home from work, I decided I would take a little run around the lake near my apartment complex (about 5 kilometers length). During this run, I found myself daydreaming and thinking about the things that were bothering me. During the run it all seemed so trivial.

I felt much better after my run. I wasn’t as tired. I was ready to start fresh. For me, a run was a cure for a really bad day.

Weekend Survey: One Day of Silence?

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This question applies to both bloggers and non-bloggers.

In a response to the murders at Virginia Tech this week, a website was started that encourages all bloggers to not blog on April 30th.

On April 30th 2007, the Blogosphere will hold a One-Day Blog Silence in honor of the victims at Virginia Tech. More then 30 died at the US college massacre.

But it´s not only about them. Many bloggers have responded and asked about all the other victims of our world. All the people who die every day. What about them?

This day can be a symbol of support to all the victims of our world!

If you are a blogger, do you plan to participate? If not, then why?

If you are one without a blog, what do you think of a “day of silence” for all bloggers?

By the way, April 20th is the anniversary of the Columbine Shootings.

The Art of Delegation

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I’m rather peeved. I’ve had a few days to calm down, and I’m still somewhat irritated.

Whenever a committee is set up to decide on an upcoming project, that committee needs to be empowered. It is beyond stupidity to set up a committee and have the person running the committee say, “I like it. But I need to run it by my boss.”

In that case, what is the point of the committee? There is none! If all the decisions are made up by the boss, then why waste the time of everyone in the committee if the committee can’t make the final decision in the first place? Aaargh!

Peeve Week 2

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Peeve Week 2

The last Peeve Week on this blog was a tremendous success. There were thirteen peeves discussing various topics.

It’s Almost Time for Peeve Week 2

My goal is to have Peeve Week 2 on this blog from June 11th through the 15th. I still have many things to work out as far as details, which is why I am making the announcement so early. I really need help from you in order to make Peeve Week 2 a success.

How You Can Help with Peeve Week 2

Help Brainstorm Topics

You can help by coming up with some topics for the second Peeve Week. I will only be picking five (one for each day), but the more the better.

Here are six potential topics that were thought of after the last Peeve week:

  • Driving
  • Religion
  • Politics
  • Restaurants
  • Stereotypes
  • Internet

Help Brainstorm Incentives for Guest-Writers

The last Peeve Week was extra special because it allowed other people to write for this website and lay out their peeves on particular topics. However, I’m trying to be somewhat ambitious and would like five peeve topics a day (one entry a day will be mine). That amounts to twenty guest-contributed articles.

The problem with getting guest-writers is how do I incentivize someone to write for this site? I was thinking of having a contest, but what could I offer as a prize?

Help Brainstorm Incentives for Other Writers

The last Peeve Week was a minor group project. I’m hoping to not only get guest-writers for my site, but link to others that decide to participate on their own blogs. Should there be an incentive for these kind of writers other than a link?

Conclusion

This post is desperately asking for your feedback and the success of Peeve Week 2 depends on feedback such as yours. Please weigh in.

Thank you.

The Traumatized Squirrel

Posted by Ronald Huereca

The squirrel — let’s call him Chester — was laying fast asleep when he heard a loud crunch.

“What was that?” He thought.

Chester glanced up from his slumber and saw it — a human close enough that he could touch it. Chester rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn’t dreaming, but the human was real.

Chester was upset. There are plenty of trees in Berkeley and this human had to pick the one to climb that he was in. What was she doing anyway?

Chester observed the human setting up some kind of electronic recording device that very much resembled a video camera. The human began pointing it at the street.

Now Chester was really upset. A human has interrupted his slumber for clandestine tendencies. Something had to be done. Chester looked around for any weapons that could be of use to knock the human out of the tree, but couldn’t find any available.

Then Chester saw it. It was a gem to behold, but it was in the middle of the street and Chester would have to sneak down the tree. The gem was a large nut that could be used to slam against this human’s skull and forever dissuade this human from climbing trees ever again!

Chester was able to sneak down without the human noticing, but a new challenge presented itself. Chester could hear a car coming. Chester listened for a moment and it seemed that the car was a safe enough distance a way to run out, grab the nut, and run back to the safety of a sidewalk.

Chester darted out and reached the nut. Blinding headlights disoriented Chester as several tons of machinery and thick smoke raced towards him. Chester closed his eyes and braced for the end.

There was silence. And then Chester opened his eyes and saw the large tire that had missed him by inches. Chester grabbed the nut and ran off, but decided to eat it rather than trying to thwart yet another human.

What is Chester Doing Today?

Chester was obviously traumatized by his ordeal. A human scared him out of his tree and a car nearly crushed him. Chester is now undergoing treatment for post traumatic stress. To this day, he can no longer climb a tree. The perpetrator in Chester’s tree was found out to be Vivien. She made a special trip from Canada to spy on American citizens and is now being interrogated by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

The one who almost murdered the squirrel was Bes Zain. He is currently under investigation for attempted vehicular homicide by local authorities.

Chester has declined to comment on this case due to pending litigation.

Misleading Headlines: Pullout Methods Explained

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I started a new series called Misleading Headlines to bring to light my annoying attention to detail. Read on for the first headline.

Did you come here to learn about pullout methods?

So what exactly are the pullout methods?

  • How to pullout of Iraq?
  • How to get out of a parking lot?
  • How to use the oldest form of birth control?
  • Or, how to back out of advertisements for radio and TV?

It’s obvious right?

The headline “Pullout Method” is indeed talking about advertisers pulling their ads from radio, tv, and other mediums. Please view the full Slate article: Pullout Method.

I am not one to post everyday. If I did, I would go insane. I simply don’t have the time. And if I did write everyday, you would probably be served useless garbage. Shawn Blanc wrote a rather convicting post that reinforces why I feel I don’t have to write everyday. There were times I would post just to post. I try not to do that anymore.

What do you think my blog work ethic is? Would you like to see me post on a more regular schedule? What would you change about the way I publish my blog posts?

Other Prizes

There’s still time to enter into my contest for the Amazon.com gift certificate. If you already entered for Monday’s contest, there is no need to re-enter. All you need to do is subscribe to my feed and follow the instructions in the blue box.

You can also win a non-monetary prize by suggesting two things to improve about my blog. Just name a non-monetary prize and give me two suggestions. I’ll do my best to fulfill your non-monetary prize suggestion. I’ve re-set the deadline for entering for this prize at 6pm CMT tomorrow.

Life is a Blog - Respect

Posted by Ronald Huereca

The Life is a Blog series is a series reflecting on my past year of blogging. The series aims to gather feedback from my readers in order to make improvements to my blog. You can find the rest of the series in the Life is a Blog category.

As with most things in my life, I try to remain respectful when interacting with others. People who know me well would tell you I have my good days and bad days. Furthermore, if you have “lost” my respect or trust, you’ll have a hard time getting it back.

I use to have the motto of, “I trust everyone until they screw me over.” Unfortunately, this motto is no longer true for me anymore. I try to respect people at first, but trust usually comes later.

Do you find that am I respectful to you on this blog? If you ever had a grievance, did I respond respectfully? How do you think I treat others and is there anything you would suggest to improve my interaction with others on this blog?

Prize 3 (Flickr Pro Account) Rules Revised

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Due to the shortness of the Flickr Activation code, I will not be posting the code in three snippets tomorrow. Here are the new rules to win the Flickr Pro Account.

  • Make a comment on the Flickr post if you are interested in the prize.
  • I will randomly select one of the commentators (only one entry per post) and send the activation code via e-mail.
  • You have until April 11th (2007) at 1800 CMT to leave a comment.

The reason I am selecting only one winner is so I don’t inconvenience anybody and so that person can potentially give the prize to someone else if need be. I find this new approach more flexible and more beneficial to the readers.

If you have any questions regarding the new rules, please do not hesitate to ask.

Life is a Blog - Credibility

Posted by Ronald Huereca

The Life is a Blog series is a series reflecting on my past year of blogging. The series aims to gather feedback from my readers in order to make improvements to my blog. You can find the rest of the series in the Life is a Blog category.

When I first started blogging, I had an opinion and a keyboard. I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do yet and was very new to blogging.

A few months into blogging, I started writing for Devlounge. Devlounge is a website geared towards designers and developers. Soon after writing for Devlounge, I realized that I wanted to release several of my script ideas for consumption. I had always liked web programming, but Devlounge seemed to unleash it for me. I released my first WordPress plugin called Feed Styler to mixed reviews.

While writing for a design/developer website, I struggled whether I had the stuff to write about design. After all, I don’t have a portfolio and I haven’t done a whole lot of work for clients. So everytime I hit the “Publish” button at the site, I was hoping the design community wouldn’t revolt and cast me into the shadows.

About the time I was struggling whether I had what it took to blog, I published an essay about blogging over at Weblog Tools Collection. The essay’s response was divided, ranging from very positive to very negative. During the few months of waiting for the essay results to come out, I had to deal with a lot of internal demons.

There are times that I still don’t think I have what it takes to blog and/or interact with the blog community. There are many extremely talented bloggers out there who I look up to. Credibility is important in the blogosphere, but the interaction between bloggers is crucial as well.

That being said about credibility, how do you think this blog does on the subject of credibility? Do you have any ideas for ways to increase the credibility of my writing?

Thank you for reading.

One of my readers struggles with a rock star persona.

Face it Josh. You are a rock star.

One of my readers will soon be basking in Best Buy glory… and in the Texas heat.

Bonnie (aka, Grandma) won my Best Buy contest. For those that didn’t win, be comforted that she will soon be basking in high humidity and the hot Texas sun.

One of my readers behaves badly.

Nathan doesn’t really behave badly, but he does have a blog title that suggest he does.

One of my readers is a humble public speaker.

Beppo has been had the opportunity to speak in front of his church and it was a very humbling experience. He also wishes he could have played for the Atlanta Braves, which can’t be that bad.

The Life is a Blog series is a series reflecting on my past year of blogging. The series aims to gather feedback from my readers in order to make improvements to my blog. You can find the rest of the series in the Life is a Blog category.

Just like in real life, bloggers have their own specialties. There are blogs that specialize in photography, pet care, blogging, technology, new products, medical care, color, design, programming, and much more.

I have a hard time providing a specialty on this blog due to its personal nature. If I find something I want to write about here, I write about it. I have noticed that over the course of the year of blogging, I have written less and less about myself.

Writing about myself from time to time is important, but I’d rather not bore people with the details.

I know I have a broad array of topics, but what do you think this blog specializes in? Is there something you would like to see me write more about?

Meme - 5 Things I Know About My Readers

Posted by Ronald Huereca

One thing the Reader Appreciation Project is trying to do is to encourage more interaction between the bloggers and readers. Here are 5 things I know about my readers.

1. One of my readers likes to fish.

Nathan Kennedy loves to fish and writes about it on his blog.

2. One of my readers and his wife have their own Christian ministry.

Shawn Blanc and his wife Anna serve as full-time Intercessory Missionaries with the International House of Prayer (IHOP).

3. One of my readers loves poetry.

Claudia Pena writes and posts poetry on her website (along with other creative writing materials). I hope she hasn’t read any of my poetry. Then she probably wouldn’t be a reader anymore. :)

4. One of my readers lives in Germany and loves music.

Cetroyer currently lives in Germany. Every few weeks, he and I talk about Christianity over Skype and talk about music.

5. One of my readers lives in Berkeley.

Bes Zain currently lives in Berkeley where he trips random people on the sidewalk. Okay, maybe not people.

Bes also likes listening to techno-type music. He loves Paul Oakenfold.

I’m pretty clueless right now what to give out for my fourth Reader Appreciation Week prize.

I’m taking a tip from InspirationBit on how I handle this prize:

The commentator with the most helpful suggestions (decided by me) will be given the non-monetary prize of their choice. If I am unable to give out the suggester’s non-monetary prize, I will offer alternatives to the winner.

The deadline for entering this contest is April 12th at 1800 CMT.

Who’s Heard of the Pickton Trial?

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Living in the U.S., I would hope that I was getting all of the news I should and not the news that someone else figured was important. However, it was brought to my attention this week by one of our northern neighbors (yes, in Canada) about the big differences between Canadian news and American news.

For a brief glimpse in the differences, check out the Fox News main page and compare that to the Canada section on CBC.

The only reason I mention the differences is that there is a pretty monumental trial going on that I’ve never heard of. The trial — dubbed the Pickton trial — involves a man who may have murdered dozens of women on his property. Continue Reading…

Third Reader Appreciation Week Prize: A Flickr Pro Account

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This contest is closed. Thanks to all who entered.

The third Reader Appreciation Week prize on this blog is a Flickr Pro Account. I will be giving away this prize on April 11th (2007).

Here’s how to win

If you go to the Flickr activation page, you’ll see that there is a code to enter. Here’s how to get the code.

  1. I will randomly select a winner from anybody that comments on this post and e-mail the activation code to that person later in the evening.

By the way, it might help subscribing to keep up with the posts. The reason I am requiring a comment is so I don’t spam a lot of people. I’d like to know people are interested in the prize before sending out a mass e-mail.

If you already have a Flickr Pro account, entering the code will add another year onto your plan for free.

The deadline for leaving a comment on this post is April 11th at 1800 CMT.

Another Prize Announcement and Naked Web Day

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This contest is now closed. Thanks to all who entered.

I’m already giving away a fifty dollar Best Buy gift card just for subscribing to my feed. Now you can actually win a ten dollar iTunes gift certificate just for commenting. On Tuesday, April 10th, I will be giving away three $10 iTunes gift certificates.

Winners will be drawn randomly from anybody who has made a comment on this site since March 19th. The more comments you have made, the better the chances of winning. Please note that I will only allow one unique winner per iTunes prize.

In the event I am unable to contact the winner, a new winner will be selected. If no winner can be successfully notified, I reserve the right to withdraw the prize offers or offer the prizes on another website.

Just for the record, I will accept entrants in the Best Buy gift certificate drawing until April 8th at 11:59pm EST. To enter, all you have to do is subscribe to my feed and provide the code you see. All comments made before April 9th at 11:59pm EST will be eligible for the iTunes gift certificates.

I’m Getting Naked and You’re Going to Like it

April 5th is Naked Web Day. What this means is that for a 24 hour period, my site will be stripped and void of all style (appearance). It’s like a website taking off its clothes and baring all. Naked Web Day is to support web standards and a good semantic site structure. I have a few things to work on for next Year’s NWD, but I think that overall, I am prepared.

500 Words - Pedophiles Helping Other Pedophiles

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Girl Being Watched By a Guy

There are how-to guides just about everywhere on the Internet. One of my favorite sites that I read daily is called wikiHow. Absent from this “how-to” site is how to be a pedophile or help with being one. Is there something wrong with learning about how to be a pedophile — someone who is attracted to young children?

While I will try to refrain from judging rather harshly, I would have to say there is something seriously wrong with a site that is geared towards pedophiles and helps pedophiles “engage in their hobby” of stalking (err, watching) young girls. One such website I learned about is called Stegl.org (no longer up, but a cache is provided). This website was geared towards helping pedophiles find safe ways to stalk little girls.

The former owner of Stegl — a 45 year-old Everett, Washington man named Jack McClellan — said that he didn’t see his website as a problem as long as children weren’t being hurt. In a related Foxnews article, McClellan said this when asked why he likes little girls: “I guess the main thing is I just think they’re cute, a lot cuter than women. I admit there is kind of an erotic arousal there.” Continue Reading…
