In a similar discussion with my grandmother she reminded me that, "we can't out-give God." When considering alll that He has done for us, my offerings are paltry in comparison, but I do believe He rewards us generously for our faithfulness. Anyway, my point was just to say thanks. God bless you both, and may He give you discernment about when and how much to give.

Thank you both for your constructive discussion on the spiritual, financial, and even “emotional” aspects of tithing/giving. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. (NIV)</blockquote>I do believe the verse is in the context of stewardship and talents, so I think you're right on. The verse is more of a warning against taking the Lord's coming (and possessions) for granted.

I believe the verse you are referring to is in Luke 12:48.

But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. I have never agreed with the churches that force their members to tithe or give a certain amount (some going so far as to demand copies of tax returns of their members). As you say, this type of behavior is too near to the legalism Jesus preached against. I agree with your assessment that how much to give is much more subjective. I think there's another verse that may apply here as well that goes something like, "To whom much has been given, much will be required." That being said, I should be giving much more of my time and money than I currently am since I have been greatly blessed. Take care,-nathan

Ronald,
This is an interesting and important topic.
