500 Words - Noisy Kids Not Allowed

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Screaming KidI was at an Olive Garden one night having dinner with my wife. We don’t go to Olive Garden very often because we consider the restaurant to be somewhat of a treat. We only go on special occasions when we feel we deserve the Olive Garden-type food. Imagine our horror as we were seated next to a family with a very angry kid.

Hopedoor is on iTunes

Posted by Ronald Huereca

For those fortunate enough to have an iTunes music store account, you should check out a band called Hopedoor. The band is a Christian praise-and-worship band with some beautiful songs. You will not be able to find this band in any “popular” retail establishments, so the band being on iTunes is a big convenience. Continue Reading…

Invent This - The Laptop Monkey

If you haven’t seen the rather hilarious Trunk Monkey commercials, you should head over to the website and check them out. After watching several of the commercials and talking to one of my friends, I thought of an idea that would revolutionize laptop security: the Laptop Monkey. Continue Reading…

For those that have frequented my forums, I want to say thank you for all the time and effort you put into each post and reply. I’ve already disabled new registrations, and I will be closing the forums for good towards the end of September.

In the mean time, I’m going to take the opportunity to resurrect several of the more polished topics here on my blog during the month of September. If you recognize a post that you have replied to via the forums, please feel free to copy/paste your reply in as a comment. If the formatting isn’t quite there, I will fix it for you.

Take care. Once again, thanks for all of your hard work.

Ten Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Write a Top 10 Topic

Posted by Ronald Huereca

It seems that every website I go to has some kind of “10 Reasons” or “Top 10″ type of article or post. The number of articles that can be found is so high, it is almost excessive. If you don’t believe me, you can check out the tag from Technorati. Since the lists are so easy to find and so prevalent, I have decided to write my own “Top 10″ list of why people shouldn’t write “Top 10″ lists or “Ten Reason” type topics.

In no particular order, here are the ten reasons why you shouldn’t write a “Top 10″ topic. Continue Reading…

I love it when people comment on my work, whether the comment is good or bad. I appreciate thoughtful comments, but there are comments that cross the line. Lorelle VanFossen wrote an excellent article on how not to comment on blogs.

Listed below is the approach I take towards comments. If you have any further questions, please leave a comment on this post. :) Continue Reading…

My Grandma’s Possessions

Posted by Ronald Huereca

My grandmother just recently passed away in July of 2006. One of the odd things about her passing was all of the possessions she left behind. I remember visiting her on occasion and just marveling at all of the various nicknacks she had accumulated throughout her long life. Every time I visited, I looked upon these precious and wonderful items in awe.

After her funeral, we were instructed to take whatever we wanted from her house because most of her possessions were either going to be sold in a garage sale or thrown away. I only had a little bit of room left in my suitcase, so I sifted through her many possessions knowing I would only be able to take a few back home. For some reason — without her — the possessions just weren’t as precious and wonderful as I thought they had been on earlier visits. Her nicknacks and possessions were just stuff — stuff I couldn’t take back on an airplane if I wanted to. Continue Reading…

Waves of Bitterness

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I sit upon this vibrant, golden shore.
The thunder crashes; lightning peeks its head.
A breeze once was, but blows now ever more.
Black clouds roll onwards, filling me with dread.
The sun is hidden from my very sight.
The ocean yearns to have me in its keep.
My words are silenced; darkness kills my might.
The waves grow fiercer, wanting me to sleep.
The shore recedes; I float, but struggle less.
My lungs cry out, exhaling all my air.
I sink, knowing my life hangs in distress.
The weight of darkness crushes my despair.
I fall beneath these waves into the deep.
The waves have won. I now go into sleep.

Even When I Fail, God Loves Me

Posted by Ronald Huereca

This past month or so I’ve had to confront a variety of internal and external issues.  I’ve been forced to examine by own faith in God, myself, and others.  This past year, all I have considered myself to be was a failure:  a failure at my job, at marriage, and most of all, a failure in my faith.  If ever I felt like a sinner, it was this past month when I thought all was lost.

500 Words - The Wrath of the Hot Coffee

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Photo of a Coffee Cup Who knew that coffee was so dangerous? For coffee drinkers, the sight of steam rising out of our coffee cups is an all too often sight. In fact, when steam isn’t rising from our coffee cups, we typically run for the microwave or fetch a new brew. Apparently, a New York woman named Alice Griffin didn’t know that coffee was hot and didn’t know that hot coffee could cause burns. Or did she?

The article regarding the mentioned that a jury awarded $300,000 to the lady who suffered a 2-inch burn with some permanent nerve damage. Since the lady just happened to be a ballerina, she can no longer perform the dances she loves due to her injury.

Invent This - You’ve Got Mail!

Posted by Ronald Huereca

Picture of a mailboxI’m not a person who receives a lot of snail mail.  Snail mail, for the uninitiated, is just standard(non-electronic) mail.  In my case, I receive snail mail through the United States Postal Service (USPS).  It is always a let down going to my apartment mailbox and discovering there is nothing there.  I think there should be a way — in the age of modern wireless communications — that the USPS could alert somebody when there is actually mail in their mailbox.  It would almost be the equivalent of your favorite instant messenger program popping up and saying, “You’ve got mail!”

Snip, Snip - Part 2

Before picture of ronald's hair getting cut

This post is actually a duplicate of the one I made yesterday.  I just wanted to test out the capabilities of Microsoft’s new blogging tool.  It can upload images into my Wordpress blog without FTP, which is rather nice.   Just for that feature alone it is far superior to the Performancing Plugin for Firefox.

One thing that is nice about the images is that you can add borders and drop shadows without any effort whatsoever.  Anyways, listed below is the actual post I did yesterday.  I just really like how the images look compared to how I laid out the blog yesterday.

Ronald After HaircutOn my recent trip to Stratford, I had my hair cut. My sister had just taken some leave from Iraq and was rather shocked by my long hair. In a twist of circumstances, I agreed to have my hair cut. We went to Dumas, Texas and bought some clippers. The next day we went back to the Dumas Wal-Mart and had a professional finish the job. Here are the before and after pics.

Website Layout Testing

Posted by Ronald Huereca

I am about to switch over to the new website layout and do some testing. If you find any problems, bugs, or things you simply don’t like, please comment on this post. Feel free to also leave kudos if you like the layout. I could use the ego boost :)

There are some issues that hopefully will be resolved during testing:

  • Internet Explorer Version 6 has this horrible flicker problem when resizing the window. I’m working with my host to get this resolved.
  • Some links are not available yet. Not all features are enabled yet. Please be patient.

There shouldn’t be any broken links, so if you find any, please leave a comment with the URL of the link that is broken and what page the link was on. Thanks a lot!

Putting Life Into Perspective

Posted by Ronald Huereca

After much hyped critical acclaim over the movie World Trade Center, I must say that for once the critics have finally done their job correctly. World Trade Center is a must see. Normally Oliver Stone movies are gory, political, and just downright vicious. However, World Trade Center doesn’t show anything unnecessary to tell the story of the two characters buried in the rubble that was once the World Trade Center. Continue Reading…

Preserving Artistic Integrity

Posted by Ronald Huereca

It appears that the band Metallica will finally sell its songs on iTunes. While I don’t find Metallica on iTunes that big of a deal, I was rather intrigued by the reasons that other bands are refusing to let their songs be downloaded individually. The band Radiohead, for example, refuses to sell their songs individually based on artistic principle. Essentially, the band believes that an album is a holistic work of art and that downloading songs apart from the rest of the album is doing the band a disservice. Hmmm. Continue Reading…
